So conclusion don't use 860 EVO and 850 EVO with iMac (I have core i5 3,1). If you try to instal os to pure ssd, it's also will be with error.

You can start from internet recovery but you cannot do fusion drive, for fusion drive you should start from USB recovery, yes you can do fusion drive with 860 EVO or 850 EVO but then when will be recovery from time machine you will se error and time machine is stop, then if you will try install new system to you new fusion formatted disk, you will cannot install, not sierra, not sierra high, maybe el captain will work but you will see many error when install it (6 hours maybe), if you still install some OS don't start to be happy, because will be many errors and white screen. Symptomatic is next: When you connect 860 EVO (I check it) or 850 EVO (I didn't check it 850 EVO, so info for 850 EVO maybe not correct).

Hi, i have same issue, Beware iMac, don't work with samsung 860 EVO (Because samsung use unsupported new controller) also same situation can be with 850 EVO (i didn't check with this series), so optimal for upgrade without any risk will be use 840 EVO series.

In Apple’s mind, probably obsolete status. I thought I'd just check in here whether there are any glaring problems with my plan of action and also anything I haven't considered re wanting to continue to use the 2011 iMac for a further 3-5 years. The external drive can then become a back-up drive. To remedy my gripes I will then replace the HDD with an internal OWC SSD, do a clean install of High Sierra and finally move my files from the external SSD to the internal one. However, I think the money might be better spent on getting my wife a MB/MBP and keeping Ol' Faithful as the family PC. My initial plan was to replace the iMac if/when the 2018 model gets released.
Luckily I moved everything over to an external T/B SSD before the drive failed. The internal HDD has failed (I was living in South Africa when the recall on the Seagate drives were done and I don't think we were notified).
It's the family PC, mainly used by my wife for web browsing and Word/Excel, and by myself for editing family photos in Lightroom (probably moving to iCloud photo library + Photos soon). I currently have a low-spec 27" mid-2011 iMac. Note that I'm already booting off an external SSD.
$300 towards my 2011 iMac to replace the (failed) HDD with a SSD, rather than replacing the whole thing. Is there any reason why I shouldn't throw a further c.
